Repainting in complete safety

Repainting in complete safety

With Spring comes many project ideas to give your home a youthful look! Repainting a room is a fun project that can completely transform a space and your decor. However, the use of chemicals in the home can pose a threat to your health if you do not take certain precautions. Here are some tips to keep in mind before choosing your paint:

Choose a paint with low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. VOC generate the distinctive odor you smell when you open a paint container. Choose a paint with low VOC emissions to minimize your exposure to these harmful substances.

Use your paint wisely. Follow all operating and safety instructions on the label, and make sure you wear all recommended safety equipment. Be aware that some specialized paints may contain a certain amount of lead, a substance that is potentially hazardous to health. However, the container label will carry a warning and instructions for safe use.

Be sure to paint in a well-ventilated environment. It will reduce your exposure to VOC emissions. Keep children and pets away from the room. If you are pregnant, ask someone else to paint.

Store paint safely in a place that is out of the reach and sight of children.

Dispose of leftover paint properly. Follow the instructions on the label and learn about your municipality's household hazardous waste collection program.
